Korean Nose Shape: How to Use a Nose Reference Photo for Your Own Face

You have a folder of saved photos, and you are searching for what a Korean nose shape actually is. The question we hear most in our consultation room is simple: "Can you make my nose look like this?" The honest answer is that a nose reference photo helps us understand your taste, but the surgical plan always starts from your own face.

Online, the Korean nose is often reduced to one word, such as "high" or "small". In practice, what makes a nose look natural is the relationship between the bridge, the tip and the nostrils, and how all three sit on the rest of the face.

In this guide you will learn:

  • the three features that create the look of a Korean style nose, and how a surgeon assesses each one
  • why a reference photo has to be adapted to your skin, cartilage and facial proportions
  • which procedure changes which part of the nose, with operating times
  • how to send your reference and photos on WhatsApp, and how long to stay in Seoul

What is a typical Korean nose shape?

Social media gives Korean noses style names. In the operating room we do not start from a name. We start by asking whether the nose is in balance with the face. That principle is written on our nose surgery page.

When people describe a Korean nose, the picture they have in mind combines three features. We assess each one separately:

  • Bridge height: enough definition to give the centre of the face some dimension, without being so high that the face loses balance.
  • Tip shape: a defined tip that is not blunt or bulbous, with a well-proportioned angle to the upper lip.
  • Nostril width: an alar rim in proportion with the bridge, so the nose does not look flat or oversized.

We also plan augmentation against a few proportions. The nose represents around a third of the face's length. The angle between the nose tip and the upper lip, called the nasolabial angle, should be well proportioned. The nostril length should be about two-thirds of the columella, the strip of skin between the nostrils.

A natural nose shape is therefore not a low or small nose. It is a nose that belongs to the face. These proportions are guides, not fixed formulas, and results vary from person to person.

Why does a nose reference photo need adapting?

A reference photo gets us talking about the same thing quickly. But the nose in that photo sits on someone else's face, with different skin, cartilage and proportions.

These are the factors that change how a reference translates to you:

  • Skin thickness: thick nasal skin or excess soft tissue makes a sharp tip harder to achieve. Thin skin makes an implant or cartilage graft easier to see.
  • Tip cartilage: when the two lower lateral cartilages sit far apart or are very rounded, the tip looks bulbous. Fixing that means reshaping the structure, not simply adding height.
  • Existing bridge and bones: a hump, wide nasal bones or a deviated nose need correcting first. Raising the bridge alone will not produce the shape in the photo.
  • Facial proportions: the right bridge width depends on where your eyebrows and eyes sit, and on the balance of your whole face.
  • Camera and lighting: reference photos are lit, made up and taken from chosen angles, so they rarely show the nose from every side.

Korean rhinoplasty techniques were developed around Asian nasal anatomy: lower bridges, thicker skin and weaker cartilage support. That is why we examine your nasal structure before talking about shape. At Banobagi, 3D CT imaging is used to plan around your bone structure, cartilage strength and skin thickness.

There is one request we cannot take as it stands: making your nose identical to the reference photo. Skin thickness, cartilage and facial proportion decide how much of that shape transfers, so we tell you which parts are reachable on your own face before anything is booked.

Which procedure changes which part of the nose?

Once a reference is broken into parts, each part can be matched to a procedure. This table summarises the options on our nose surgery page.

Augmentation rhinoplasty: bridge and tip together

In augmentation rhinoplasty we work on the tip first. An incision is made inside the nostril and across the skin of the columella, and cartilage is inserted so the tip length stays in balance. An implant is then placed along the bridge to match the new tip. The tip is shaped with your own cartilage, septal or ear, rather than synthetic material.

It suits a low bridge, a blunt or flat tip, a first-time rhinoplasty, or nostrils that feel too noticeable. For a wider look at implants, cartilage and reduction options, read our guide to Korean rhinoplasty.

Alarplasty: is the width at the base or the tip?

Width can come from different structures. A wide alar base, flared nostrils or thick rims respond to alarplasty. If the width mostly comes from tip cartilage, tip work during rhinoplasty is the better tool. Once the alar rim is narrowed, the tip looks slimmer and the bridge looks higher, and the scar is placed to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Nose revision: start from the cause

If you have had surgery before and want a new shape, nose revision surgery begins by analysing why the previous result looks the way it does. A tip that has drooped over time, a bridge that is too high or low, or a visible implant each need a different method and material.

How to use your reference photo in an online consultation

Most of the plan can be settled before you book a flight. The steps are:

  1. Take three photos of yourself: front, side profile and 45-degree angle. Use good light, no heavy make-up and no filters.
  2. Attach your reference photo and say which part you like: bridge, tip or nostrils, and how much change you want.
  3. Share relevant history, such as earlier nose surgery or filler, and any regular medication.
  4. Your coordinator matches your case with a surgeon and schedules a time.
  5. You discuss options, length of stay and the cost range with the surgeon.
  6. The plan is confirmed in person on the day you arrive, after examination.

Checklist of what cannot be settled online:

  • the final surgical plan
  • measurements that depend on physical examination or imaging
  • whether an existing implant or earlier surgery changes the approach
  • clearance for anaesthesia

Banobagi uses a real-name surgeon system: the surgeon who consults you is the surgeon recorded as performing your operation. A 1:1 coordinator handles language, accommodation and transport.

Common myths about the Korean nose

  • "Higher means more Korean." Not true. A nose too high for your proportions disrupts facial balance. A natural look comes from balance between bridge, tip and nostrils.
  • "Bring a photo and you will get that exact nose." A reference sets the direction. Your skin, cartilage and facial structure decide how closely it can be adapted.
  • "Raising the bridge fixes wide nostrils." Augmentation adds definition, but a genuinely wide alar base needs alarplasty assessed on its own.
  • "If I dislike the result, I can revise it straight away." Our revision guidance is to wait at least 6 months after the first operation. Planning a precise revision usually means waiting about 12 months, because tip swelling resolves slowly and can both hide and mimic problems.
  • "A bulbous tip just needs tissue removed." A bulbous tip often comes from thick skin, wide cartilage or excess soft tissue. Removing tissue alone is rarely enough, so structure is often added with your own cartilage.

Recovery and how long to stay in Seoul

Every procedure below is performed under sedation, monitored by the clinic's own full-time anaesthesiology team. You are discharged on the day, with 2 visits for stitch removal.

Surgery and recovery specs by procedure
ProcedureAnaesthesiaStitch removalDaily activities
Augmentation rhinoplastySedationAfter about 10 daysIn 7-10 days
AlarplastySedationAfter 7-10 daysIn 3 days
Hump removalSedationAfter about 10 daysIn 7-10 days
Nose revision surgerySedationAbout 10 daysIn 5 days

Nose surgery recovery generally follows this pattern:

  1. Days 1-3: the nasal splint stays in place. Swelling and bruising around the nose and under the eyes peak within 48-72 hours. Sleep elevated, use cold compresses and avoid blowing your nose.
  2. Days 7-10: the splint and stitches come out and your surgeon checks healing. Swelling has noticeably reduced, and you are cleared for light activity and travel home.
  3. Weeks 2-4: bruising fades and the shape starts to refine. Light exercise can resume after 3 weeks. Avoid contact sports, swimming and resting glasses on the bridge.
  4. Months 6-12: residual swelling resolves, especially at the tip.

Plan to stay in Seoul for at least 10 days after nose surgery. That allows time for check-ups, splint and stitch removal and early recovery before you fly. Cabin pressure can cause discomfort if you travel too soon. Do not book a return flight until your surgeon has confirmed the plan.

Before you arrive, stop aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E and herbal supplements, and avoid alcohol for at least 2 weeks. If you smoke, stop as early as possible, because smoking impairs nasal tissue healing. After you fly home, you can send photos to your coordinator at weeks 1-2, month 1 and month 3. Recovery and results vary between individuals.

Summary

  • A Korean nose shape, from a surgeon's view, is balance between bridge, tip and nostrils, not height alone.
  • A nose reference photo communicates your taste, but it must be adapted to your skin thickness, cartilage and facial proportions.
  • Bridge and tip are addressed with augmentation, wide nostrils with alarplasty, and a previous result with revision once its cause is understood.
  • Send three photos and your reference on WhatsApp to discuss options, stay and cost range, then confirm the plan in person.
  • Plan at least 10 days in Seoul after nose surgery.

If you already have a reference in mind, send it with your own front and side photos on WhatsApp and tell us which part you like. We will explain which procedures relate to it and how the shape can be adapted to your face. Results vary, so the final plan is confirmed after examination in Seoul.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one ideal nose shape?

No. What counts as an attractive nose depends on personal preference, culture and era, and an ideal in one place can differ in another. The most suitable nose for you is one that sits in harmony with your own facial features and matches what you want, planned with breathing function and structural strength in mind.

What age is suitable for nose surgery?

Generally after the nose has finished growing, which is usually by the late teenage years. For girls this is often around 16 to 17, and for boys a little later, around 17 to 18. Everyone matures at a different rate, and emotional readiness and realistic expectations matter as much as physical growth.

How much does it cost to get a Korean style nose at Banobagi?

We do not publish a fixed price list. The cost depends on which parts of the nose need work, the materials used and whether procedures are combined. Send front and side photos on WhatsApp and you will receive a personal quote after our team has reviewed them. The final plan is confirmed in person in Seoul.

Can augmentation and alarplasty be done in the same operation?

Usually yes, and augmentation rhinoplasty with alarplasty is our most popular combination. The nostrils are narrowed after the bridge and tip work, because tip projection and rotation change how wide the base looks. Narrowing first risks removing more than needed.

Can rhinoplasty improve breathing as well as shape?

It can. Functional rhinoplasty addresses rhinitis, sinusitis, a deviated septum and nasal valve narrowing alongside the shape of the nose. It takes about 2 hours under sedation, and daily activities resume in 7 to 10 days.

When can I wash my face after nose surgery?

You can wash your face gently from the day after surgery, avoiding the nose and keeping the splint and dressings dry. Once the splint comes off, usually within about a week, you can wash more normally while staying gentle around the nose.

Will I get frequent nosebleeds after surgery?

Some minor bleeding or spotting is expected just after surgery, but frequent nosebleeds later on are not typical. Early bleeding usually settles within the first few days. Avoid blowing your nose and strenuous activity, and follow your aftercare instructions.
